Tata Nano diesel
The much debated 1Lakh rupee car came into existence at pretty much the promised price by Ratan Tata, well almost! Launched in the first quarter of 2009, the Nano was touted to be the quintessential Maruti 800 killer. The sales however reflected a very different story. Prior to the launch, much was said and argued about the car as to whether it may turn out to be a hassle in the already congested roads of our country, but none of that happened. Infact the Nano’s sales haven’t really sky rocketed as the company had expected.
However now, Tata is back with a significant change to the Nano, its heart. The Nano will soon be made available with a diesel engine option and going by the success diesel motors have in India, this version will easily prove to be a huge success in India. The engine expected to power the diesel Nano is a 700cc 2-cylinder DICOR unit and is more or less the same 1.4 lt DICOR engine that powers the current Indica / Indigo range minus 2 cylinders. Honeywell, a Minneapolis based company has developed the world's smallest turbo system for the Nano and Bosch will fit the world's smallest Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDI) system to it. The words in concern are 'world's smallest' but for Tata it means 'large' sales figures and well for us it could only mean the 'cheapest to own and run diesel car in the world'.
The Nano diesel is expected to return ARAI cerified fuel economy of around 30kmpl which should translate to 19-20kmpl in city usage. The Nano diesel will be priced around Rs 50000 - Rs 60000 more than the current petrol Nano and this will simply make it irresistible value for money.
