Pros: great space, good small utility vehicle, decent milage
Cons: none

I have recently purchased wagon-r in sep-09 after traveling for 8 years on alto 1.1 vx 2001 model(you might have seen my review on alto as well) and its around 5k on the dial , so i thought i must write something,(i am still having my Alto-1.1, this is my second car)

I started my search for a car which i would be driving 20km/day in city and for delhi-lucknow (550km via nh2) in a quarter.

My options were , in the order of my priority :

Maruti Suzuki Wagon-r
Hyundai Santro
Chevrolet Spark
Maruti Suzuki Zen Estilo
indica
Maruti Suzuki Alto
Hyundai i10

I started by visiting maruti showroom and saw wagonr, zen estilo, alto side by side , since i already have an Alto i got attracted to it once more but then my wife reminded me we already have one and there is no point we go for second one. Actually that was one of the main reason i was not able to zero in for alto otherwise its the best city car still of my choice (even after the launch of a-star). anyways i then saw zen estilo and wagonr , sales man promptly told me that if you are going for wagonr lxi you can always go for zen estilo at nearly same price with some extra features like power window. i sat in wagonr as well as in estilo, it was not big difference but there was some difference, for me interiors hardly matters as i would be driving the car and i would be having no time to sit and look at interiors and appreciate it, so i tried to analyze the space factor and performance after test driving both of them, wagonr had a bit extra, then i again compared shape of wagonr vs zen estilo and i found the so called ugly boxy shape to be much more decent and appealing than zen estilo, and we quickly decided it would be wagonr if it would be maruti.

after few days we went to hyundai's showroom and compared santro and i10, santo gave good run to wagonr but it failed on milage point, One of my relative has santo 2008 model and he told it gives atmost 13km/ltr(viewers excuse me if you get more), service is costlier by 300-400 for santro and it is slightly stiff at back seat(where my Ammi and wife would be sitting). However it had a more roomy feel when sitting inside, but still there were enough -ive simply enough to keep it far from me, then i saw i10 and at the next moment i was really taken away by the looks and overall feel of the car, it was actually the car i must go(that was my first reaction), and i started to study more about this car and see if i can get this one, everything was fine , millage, space was decent, car looks great, interiors were different, PRICE nearly 50k more than wagonr and that too for the basic version, it was enough to drive me out of the hyundai showroom,

and we headed to see for spark, i entered in the showroom and opened the door of spark, and for the first time i felt that there is some material used to build the car otherwise till now it seems that the thickness of steel used for body structure of car seems to me reducing, i am not adjusted to see console in the middle and that was the first thing i couldn't swallow , next thing was the storage space in the back, it was really less, but there were huge discounts on offer and sales man started to compare wagonr to spark as he heard us talking about wagonr, he told us very clearly that you could get a car that is same as wagonr and has a price tag near alto , it was only the space that was negative for a spark.

finally we went to see an Indica , it was perfect in terms of space , performance (it is the most used car commercially), price. But it has a feel of a taxi really attached to its image.

We even heard of discontinuation of wagonr after splash would be launched. there would be no issue in service and spares even if it is discontinued as its a maruti(esteem is discontinued but you can see enough of them on road today)

finally we went for a wagon-r , and there is absolutely no regrets till date. We have recently traveled around 500km non stop in 6hrs on nh2 , and that too with four adults and a kid, 4 suitcases, a foldable baby cot, 50kg rise packet, a 10/10feet rug, a sewing machine ... EVERYTHING INSIDE THE CAR (NO CAREERS AT THE ROOF).

It never lacked in power even when the ac was on. It is a real good old car , it doesn't looks that great but its a real utility vehicle for an average middle class person searching for a true companion. It is trusted for around a decade now.

This car is a bit extra in terms of parking space, but still its worth.
This is a good city car + good highway car.   Write a Comment

I brought wagonR in Sep'09 so far i completed 16K kms travelling hilly, plain regions, good and bad roads. Travelled continuosly (with a break of 30 minutes)for 400kms with elderly people without any problem. leg space enables people to stretch their legs without any discomfort. The car is abosolutely fine. Of course good space to accomodate entire family's luggage. Good mileage of 17km/ltr on NH with AC. Good pickup even with 5 people + luggage.

sir,i also own a wagon r vxi from the past 2 and half years,it is very good car and dont feel underpowered if only two people without ac are sitting but once you tap the ac button you can feel about 15 percent power wasted.but the power delivery will be sufficient if you have to drive very calm but according to me (younger genaeration),power of this car is never adequate for enjoyable driving unless ac is turned off and less than or equal to 2 people are sittng, one great thing about the car is that it provides enough torque in first gear to skid tyres very often and i am not joking at all.zen estilo being hated for style has much more balanced steering than wagon r as my cousin have estilo and i have compared both.the fit and finish and build quality is very low of wagon r like other cars of maruti.it rattels a lot when you put woofer in the dicky.the new wagon r seems very good interior wise but there is some foul in the exterior styling of this car and further always appreciated boot space has been decreased by a fair amout in the new wagon r.if you want to see me having fun with wagon r then search youtube-wagon r reverse doughnuts by fufa ful singhthank you
