Mitsubishi Cedia Sport: A good option

Launched in early 2006 , the Mitsubishi Cedia was a kind of car that did most things well but had nothing special to offer. It was refined , fairly well kitted , drove decently well with a pleasant and classy interior , but it just didn’t have the spice that could make a C segment buyer sit up and take notice. Even with the Lancer lineage , the Cedia just did not look aggressive enough , dare i say , appears feminine.

But its looks like Mitsubishi India has woken up from its slumber (maybe even hibernation) and launched a sports version of the Cedia. Mitsubishi has revised the styling of its ageing saloon inside out and to put it straight , the Cedia Sports looks striking. A new sleek front grille with horizontal slats has replaced the older rather feminine looking one. They have also added sporty front and rear bumpers , side skirts and a rear spoiler. Another (very) noticeable change is the 15-inch alloy wheels from OZ. Interestingly , unlike many of its competitors , Mitsubishi has provided OZ alloys even for the spare wheel. The only disappointment is the new graphic decals (spare the Ralliart decal , please) that do not look very artistic.

Slip inside the car and you are in for more surprises. The first thing you would notice is the rally style three-spoke leather wrapped aluminum steering wheel. Look closely at the centre spoke and the MOMO logo is sure to blow you away. Although the dials and instrumentation remain the same , the dash has been tastefully finished in titanium and carbonfibre (faux , as usual). Nestled right in the center is a new Kenwood stereo. But wait , how could I call it a stereo as it plays DVD , DivX , MPEG , JPEG , MP3 and all other digital formats on its touch screen interface. You can also hook your iPod and USB drive. Hell , it also works as a phone (with Bluetooth) and even has a navigation system that actually works in India. Mitsubishi have also replaced the old HVAC unit with a new single zone climate control system. The upholstery including the gear lever has been attractively done up in black leather with bright red accents. On the safety front , the car remains well kitted with ABS , EBD and two airbags.

Sit in , buckle up , slot into first and step on the sporty alloy pedals and you could be in for a surprise , albeit of the negative kind. Because under all this glittery and dazzling body , the car is still a 2006 Mitsubishi Cedia which like I described in paragraph number two is not very , how can I put this , inspiring. This is really a cardinal sin given the presence of a Ralliart logo. But with all that exclusive equipment and an asking price of Rs 9.9 lakhs (All India) , the Cedia can potentially make a good option.

Mitsubishi has to give us something better than this!!! No longer would anyone be carried away by mere looks. The engine technology appears to be favouring a better fuel efficiency rather than outright power. They could have plonked in a good CRDI diesel, which they do not have for the Indian market. The older Lancers still command a very good residual value (only for the diesels). I would say that if they had plonked in a CRDI engine, they would have doubled their very poor sales of the Cedia.
